Bristol’s Best Bits: Bowie Brunch & Bristol Spirit Launch

Exciting things are afoot in Bristol at the moment. It seems we can’t go five minutes without something new springing up somewhere in the city, and this week sees the launch of the much-anticipated Bristol Spirit, tucked away in the heart of St George to bring the people of BS5 a bit of gin-soaked revelry to liven up these grey January days.

Brought to you by Phil Gillies and Sam Espensen, the same brains behind the fantastic independent drinks label Espensen Spirit, Bristol Spirit is a bar-cafe-kitchen open three days a week for food, drinks, workshops, art shows, pop ups, BRUNCH and other such general merrymaking. Heading up the kitchen is chef Oliver Tidman, once of Mathilda’s Chilli Bar fame (RIP *sob*) and now bringing his skills to whip up a Middle Eastern-inspired menu.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of Espensen Spirit (at the equally fantastic 20th Century Flicks) at the tail end of last year, and instantly fell head over heels with them – everything from the branding, the slender bottles they’re packaged in, the clever names of each drink, and not to mention the taste of the booze itself! I would like to credit Sam and the Espensen Spirit crew for helping me on my road to liking gin, with an elegant cheesecake-themed cocktail creation whipped up with their blueberry gin. Heaven!

Kicking off the celebrations prior to their launch on the 20th January is a themed brunch in honour of grand high wizard and much-missed master of music and ever-changing hairstyles, David Bowie. Their ‘Bowie Brunch‘ will feature some top nosh choices from their brand new kitchen and plenty of cocktails of course, with Bowie choons spinning on the decks all day long. On the menu is chipotle shakshuka with avocado flatbreads (topped with locally-sourced bacon for the meaties), followed by french toast ice cream sandwiches with fruit compote, laced with lashings of their delicious Gin Genie Blueberry Gin (obvs!).

If this sounds right up your street and you’re free on the 14th January, then snap up the last few remaining tickets here!
