Another post in association with Arla – read on for a cheeky chocolate breakfast smoothie recipe!
Ahh, the humble breakfast smoothie. From such modest beginnings to the heady heights of Pinterest fame, I feel like the breakfast smoothie has been through rather a lot over the last few years. It carries a lot of importance on its little shoulders – breakfast is the most important meal of the day, after all – so you want to make sure you’re filling your breakfast smoothie with all the right ingredients.
With their #ChooseGoodness campaign, Arla is changing the way we think about breakfast. With just a spare 10 minutes every morning you can create a delicious and healthy breakfast and pop off to work with a full tum. It’s certainly worth taking the extra time to set you up for the rest of the day. Take a look at the recipes on the Arla website for more ideas!
You might be reading this and thinking, Lily… you are telling me to drink chocolate milk for breakfast. And you would be correct. Whilst it’s not notoriously the most nutritional foodstuff in the universe, who says you can’t have chocolate for breakfast?! Besides, I’ve added a few little extras which make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need first thing in the am.
I’ve used Arla’s LactoFree chocolate milk for this recipe, and pimped this guy up with some maca root powder, which is choc full of vitamins B, C and E, as well as some chia seeds which are massively high in omega fatty acids and keep you full up til lunch. Alongside antioxidant-rich cherries, it packs a powerful nutrient punch – you’d almost forget that you were drinking a chocolate milkshake for breakfast!
You will need:
– Arla LactoFree Chocolate Milk
– Organic Maca Root powder (optional)
– Chia seeds (optional)
– a large handful of cherries, pitted (tinned or frozen cherries would also work, but fresh is best)
This really is a simple case of gathering together all of your ingredients, popping them in a blender and blitzing together.
If you’re using frozen cherries then your smoothie will already be nice and cool, if not then you might want to pop a couple of ice cubes in there to make everything super chill.
If you don’t happen to have a blender, then by sheer determination and willpower you can probably make this recipe work. A stick blender should be up to the job, or if you’re feeling really rustic, then how about smushing the cherries, chia seeds and maca in a pestle and mortar and then stirring into the chilled chocolate milk.
This recipe is entirely open to interpretation – if you’re a fan of oats in your smoothie, go ahead and add oats. If you’re a protein powder fan, go wild! As long as you’re getting some nourishment down you, that’s all that matters.
I’m a big fan of a liquid breakfast. If you’re anything like me, then you’ll know it’s pretty damn hard to get going in the morning, and choosing between 5 minutes extra in bed or making breakfast, I will always hit snooze every time. But just by getting up a wee bit earlier and opting to #ChooseGoodness, you can start your work day a little bit happier and healthier.
Try it, and let me know how you get on! I love hearing when people have tried making my creations. Tweet me @lilydoughball or leave a comment below.
